Fort Lee PARCC Schedule

School #1 Participates In Hour of Code Events During Computer Science Week, December 5-11

Hour of Code

School #1 is participating in Hour Of Code during Computer Science Education Week from December 5-11. The annual global campaign is an effort to ensure all students are equipped with valuable 21st century critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our students will be participating in events during the school day in their classrooms as well as in library class.

Giving students the confidence to understand how technology works and the ability to control it, is an increasingly important part of children’s education today. School 1 wants all students to experience how easy and empowering it is to learn programming.

Thank you, Pam Gunther!

On November 15th, Pam Gunther, owner of Fit and Fun Playscapes, met with the fifth and sixth grade G&T students from Schools No. 1 and No. 3 to support this year’s “Art of Play” unit of study. While this is a design challenge for the fifth graders, the sixth graders were invited to attend because they will be providing input and insights as the teams work through their designs. Mrs. Gunther will continue with follow-up “work” sessions during the project, which will culminate in team presentations to a panel of judges. The “winning” team’s design will be manufactured by her company and the game/activity stencil will be painted on the playgrounds of Schools No. 1 and No. 3 for all to enjoy!

Thank you to the Fort Lee School District for supporting this project!

Environmental Club- Hydroponic System

School 1 is excited to participate in a new hydroponic growing system through the support of FLEF.
Mrs. Minutolo and the 6th graders, along with members of the Environmental Club, will use the system to sustainably grow a variety of vegetables and plants. Throughout the process, they will research the benefits and disadvantages of hydroponic farming and enjoy the tasty fruits of their labor.

Thank you Mayor Sokolich and Mr. Mignone!
On November 1st, Mayor Mark Sokolich and Borough Engineer, Mr. Ed Mignone, met with the fifth and sixth grade G&T students from Schools No. 1 and No. 3 to support this year’s Community Passive Park/Garden Design project. The mayor provided information regarding the property that is being donated to Fort Lee by the Luppino family and spoke about his vision for the park. Mr. Mignone provided tax and zoning maps and started to get the students to think like engineers who will solve problems inherent to this design process project. Mr. Mignone will continue with follow-up “work” sessions during the project, which will culminate in team presentations to a panel of judges. One aspect or more of the “winning” team’s design will be incorporated into the actual town plans.
